How to access unsw zmail from google?

with 2 comments

Every UNSW student knows the zmail, a legendary email service that is used for academic stuffs (ask supervisor, lecturers, submit assignments, etc). Zmail has its own login system and interface. on the other hand, you have your private google email and has been using it for years.

A very good news is you can access the zmail through the google mail, and you could also send an email on behalf of your student mail. (that’s why i loooove google so much). So, if you could configure it sucessfully, you can just say goodbye to zmail-login-interface coz you are no longer need it.

ok, lets get started.

  1. Your very first step is to make sure that you have the windows live account. you may wondering, “windows live id?” well, UNSW has outsource it’s email service to microsoft. That’s why each user will be given a windows live id account that is linked to UNSW email alias. Once you are able to login to your zmail (https://zmail.unsw.edu.au), that means you have your windows live id account activated. your windows live id account will be: zxxxxxxx@zmail.unsw.edu.au
  2. Next step is to setup your windows live id password. To check whether your live id pasword has been setup or not, just try to login to www.hotmail.com . If you can’t login there, it means the password hasn’t been setup. i dont think you can use your zpass/unipass here (well, you could try). Therefore, you need to reset it by clicking “Forgot your password?”. Microsoft will send you a new password to your account. This password is the windows live id password which is different from unipass/zpass.
  3. Login to your google account, and go to “setting” -> ”account and import”.
  4. If you want to pull your emails in zmail to google, then you have to add a “POP3 email account” . some important parameters:
email address: your windows live id (zxxxxxxx@zmail.unsw.edu.au)
username: your windows live id (zxxxxxxx@zmail.unsw.edu.au)
password: your windows live id password
    POP server: outlook.com
    port: 995
    tick:
    – Always use a secure connection (SSL) when retrieving mail.
    – label incoming message
    – archive incoming message
    example:
  5. If you want to send an email on behalf of zmail from google, then you need to add “SMTP account. Some important parameters are:
    name: your name
email address: your windows live id (zxxxxxxx@zmail.unsw.edu.au)
    reply-to-address: your email alias (blablabla@student.unsw.edu.au)
    – example:
    – choose “Send through zmail.unsw.edu.au SMTP servers”
    SMTP server: pod51000.outlook.com
    port: 587
username: your windows live id (zxxxxxxx@zmail.unsw.edu.au)
password: your windows live id password
    example:
  6. That’s all. You now can say goodbye to zmail-login-interface. bye bye…. 🙂

Thanks for IT intern 2011 colleagues for being an experimental object.
