Apa saja jenis-jenis pekerjaan di dunia IT (information technology) & Telekomunikasi?
Let’s speak in English
Dear all,
Today, I’m really proud of what you all have done so far.
You’ve made a good initiative, create an English forum.
It’s a wonderful thing, indeed.
Just want to introduce myself,
My name is Achmad Mardiansyah, ST3, industrial engineering 99.
Right now, I’m working as a GSM engineer in one of Telco company.
I just wanna share my experience using English when i was student and while working at present.
As you all know, english in indonesia is a foreign language, not a second language (like India, Malaysia), or a first language (like USA/UK).
So many people are far of this language.
There was an english day at school, but it didn’t work because many students just ignore it. And the bad thing is, if somebody tries to speak english in front of people or just wanna practice english, that person often labeled as a “show off” person. this is not right!
for me, i realize english is become an important language in the world.
So i need to get used to it, no other options.
In the beginning of my study at STT Telkom, I tried not to deny any english textbooks. It was very hard really, simply because this seems like an alien for me.
Fortunately, I like computer, I have a hobby to play around with computer software.
To me, computer is an amazing thing, you can do anything you want with that box. I learned LINUX operating since the first semester and still using it today. My first toys were: redhat 6.0 and mandrake 7.0. I didn’t know slackware at that time.
The ability to read English text are mostly coming from the hobby. Reading the command manuals, buy a textbook, discussing stuffs in some english linux forum, setup mailing list, etc.
Slowly but sure, I was getting familiar with English text.
Mann… I really want to improve my English. I have to.
I joined SEC (Student English Club), reading English novels, listening to English news, singing english songs, and also watch english DVDs.
well, i found there are several tricks for watching a english movie. First, buy the English novel of that movie if it’s available, and read it. Second, now you can watch the movie.. yeah..! I usually play DVD WITHOUT any subtitle, then compare the understanding to the novel. If there are parts that I missed in the movie, then just enable the ENGLISH subtitle, no malay/Indonesian please..
In my opinion, you’ll get huge benefits If you join an English club, it would improve the speaking part, which is hard for most Indonesian people. You could join a debate team as well. if you are one of them, your English ability will be significantly increased. because, in a debate, you’ll be forced (in positive way), to quickly think and say your ideas, minimizing pauses, and the most important, it’s in English format. Of course, there’re rules for debate that you need to follow in the club.
As a last gift at the end of my study, I wrote my final project in English. this includes the final project book as well as the presentation.
Thank you god, all of these phases have been though…
Well, there was still a problem: you need to prove your English, so that everybody in the world will recognize your English skill. You need to be certified, you need to be checked in which english level you are. I took my IELTS international exam in bandung, with preparation several months previously.
If you plan to continue your study abroad especially in English speaking country on engineering major, most uni requires IELTS score at about 6.5-7.0.
At that time, I just got score 6.0, so still unqualified to enrolled abroad universities. however, this is a nice information that at least I know how good my english is, and I got international certification.
I applied a job in a international company, and luckily I was accepted. i passed all ininterviews smoothly. i’m working as GSM engineer now, doing some technical jobs in core network. Again, I feel im lucky because the environment here is very conducive to improve my English.
English is standard language in a multinational company. most of reports, emails, forms, requests, are written in English. for daily conversations, among local people, we are still using Indonesian. My colleagues here are also foreigner, we need to speak English to share ideas, suggestions, even jokes.
The English skill becomes more important especially when I have abroad assignments, away from indonesia. You have to survive there with English, there’s no way to get a rid of it. Technically, Indonesian engineers are good. however, The problems with Indonesian engineers are language and mentality. Indonesian people tend to be a good listener, rarely to speak.
Well, I think that’s all my experiences dealing with these English things. I hope for everybody who read this article cloud get something useful.
For everybody who still struggling and trying to speak English, just keep going…
Never stop learning, don’t be shy, don’t be afraid, and never feel tired.
For everybody who can be able to speak, keep improve it…
learning Never stop…
Thank you for reading
